We spent the morning with our big buddies at Bancroft Pond. We discovered so many amazing things and made some terrific inquiries. It was a beautiful morning. Ask your kiddos about their experiences! What a great way to end the year together. I will miss your children dearly. Enjoy your summer with your sweet babes!

Today was our last day with Master Corbin. As a culmination of our time with him we joined with Mrs. Sharkey and her 1st and 2nd graders in the lunch room. We did some work together before we attempted to break boards. All of our kinder kiddos tried and nearly all broke a board. Their broken boards came home today. I’m sorry if I missed your kiddo but I tried to get all of your sweet babes in these photos! Its been such a busy week. Here are some photos from our week together. See you all on Wednesday at 8:30am in the Music room. Our time in the ODC this morning was spent making new discoveries, noticing fine details of nature, showing each other what we found, making inquiries, and Nature Journaling. So many important science and reading/writing skills being practiced during this time. Last week we went out in the ODC and I read the kiddos the book If Rocks Could Sing a fantastic book created by a women in Florida that likes to take walks on the beach. She began collecting rocks that washed up on the shore. These rocks resembled the letters of the alphabet. She was inspired by her nature collection to create an ABC Book as a way of sharing her collection with us. During our time exploring in the ODC your kiddos found many letters in nature. At the end of the day we decided to take books out front to read while we enjoyed our snack!
It was a great day for a field trip. There’s no better way to spend a Tuesday morning than dancing in a beautiful dance space with great people! I wish everyday could be like today! We spent most of our day outside learning. After Creative Movement in the gym we went in the ODC and made great observations and discoveries resulting in lots of inquiries. We sketched and wrote about our thinking in our Nature Journals. After lunch recess we studied the work of Andy Goldsworthy. Ask your kiddos what inspires Andy to do art. Then we went out in the front yard and tapped into our inner Andy and used dandelions to make nature art. After we did a gallery walk and shared the inspiration for our art pieces we came inside to us the restroom and get a drink of water. Then we headed back out to the ODC. I pulled reading groups in the gathering area while the others had Outdoor Discovery Centers and/or Nature Journaled. It was a fabulous way to spend our day! Then we had a snack before heading out to last recess!
We went in the ODC with our Nature Journals today after lunch. I asked the kiddos, “Why do we Nature Journal?” They had all the right answers! Here’s what they said: to entertain ourselves, to calm ourselves, it’s a way to do art, we observe things, make discoveries, and ask questions, to be in nature, because it’s not technology, to have fun, to have something to look at to remember each other when we aren’t together. There are so many benefits to Nature Journaling! It was bike to school day today. Check out ALL the bikes that came to school with happy children! Amazing!!! Tomorrow is the LC Bike Rodeo. Bring your bikes and helmets to the playground from 4-5:30!
Oh my goodness your kiddos have just taken off! They have officially joined the Literacy Club. During our morning routines your kiddos have a chance to look at books with a partner or by themselves. It is amazing to watch them truly read these books, using all the strategies they have learned so far this year. Here is a perfect example: watch these kiddos get their mouths ready, stretch out words, think about what would make sense, and the self corrections these kiddos make are top notch. Catching ourselves making mistakes is one of the challenges of being a new reader. Discovery Centers are a perfect time for kiddos to process what they are learning in school and at home. Check out Ms. J’s creation. We are learning how to read and write sight words. Ms. J took it to the next level! She built a 3D representation of one of our important words! We also had a visit from Master Corbin where he continued teaching us about self defense. Ask your kiddos to teach you what they have learned so far. Another great day in K!
Your kiddos cheered when I announced we were going to go in the Outdoor Discovery Core to do some Nature Journaling. I love their enthusiasm! I said I wasn’t going to blog this week for Unplug and Play Week but I couldn’t resist sharing these pictures! We began the day asking the question, “What is nature?” These kiddos have a solid understanding of what nature is and what comes from nature. Then we asked the question, “What can we do with nature?” They had so many ideas from making art with natural items to building log homes. I had set out 5 centers worth of natural items to explore. They came up with so many different ways to entertain themselves using these materials. After circulating through all the centers we reflected on our discoveries. Then I shared with them that these materials are all used to play different traditional Native American games. I taught them how to play the games and then we rotated through each center once again. This afternoon they had their second visit from SPARK artist Nancy Seiler. She continued her lesson in Nature Journaling and let them try it for themselves. We will be Nature Journaling during our last unit of inquiry with the central idea “Nature inspires creativity.”
*There are no photos for the afternoon as I had to go home to take care of a sick kiddo. |
