Your kiddos were amazing today. Here is a video of Jingle Bell Rock. Before our performance we learned about another holiday that is happening at this time of year, Hanukkah. We read a book and then learned how to play Dreidel. They loved it! I didn't realize how many math and social skills this game reinforces: counting, dividing a quantity in half, comparing quantities, adding on, taking turns, problem solving, following directions. After lunch we read a fantastic story Mother Bruce. Super adorable story we got as a gift today from Ms. F's family from the book fair. Ask your kiddo about the story. Then we had Inquiry Center time. Our big buddies joined us today so their teacher could go watch her kiddo in the 1:00 performance. It was a great day!
We headed out to recess extra early today because of our Holiday Program rehearsal. We headed outside with Ms. Cooper's class and enjoy the playground to ourselves. With all the snow we had a blast! We found this beautiful work of art. We call it, "The Mitten Tree". It might be a good idea to check our school Lost and Found tomorrow when you come for the holiday program that is scheduled for 10:15. Come early to get a seat. Here is a pic from rehearsal today. The rest of the day was great with a bit of choice time, art, and being an audience for the other kinder kiddos performing in the afternoon tomorrow. Another great day in K!
What a busy day. We began with a holiday performance rehearsal followed by a visit from Ms. Myers. We went to the library after recess, added a new poem in our Poetry Notebooks, did an art project with oil pastels, had Inquiry Centers with big buddies, and played in the snow. Phew! What a great day! Here are some pics to prove it! Today Mr. Matt played us some beautiful music and also taught us some fun sing along songs. Mr. Matt is a CSCT Teacher at our school and his last day in our room is tomorrow. He has been a positive force in our room that will truly be missed. He is taking a different position in our school so hopefully we will get to see him every once in a while! We had a great day playing in the snow, having Math and Literacy Centers, a read aloud called Winter is the Warmest Season, music with Mr. Matt, a visit from some 3rd grade buddies, and Inquiry Centers where we began making our gifts for our families. It was a fabulous snowy day in K!
We began the day with Math Workshop. We learned how to play the game "Compare" also know as "War" at home. They had so much fun that many partner groups were giggling. When we play this game we are practicing recognizing numbers and comparing numbers using the vocabulary more than, less than, equal to. We also use the words greater than or fewer! Then we had Math and Literacy Centers. Followed by Writer's Workshop. After lunch we listened to the book Bear Snores on, by Karma Wilson. Followed by Inquiry Center Time. Another great day in K!
Ms. Webb came in and did an art lesson using clay. They made clay chicken bells today. Check out the photos of our super focused clay artists. We read the book The Night Tree with our big buddies. It's about a family who travels into the edge of the woods on Christmas Eve and decorates a tree for the animals with edible decorations. Then we made our own night trees with our big buddies. Today we began the day with an Owl themed Yoga since it was going to be the day of Owls. We learned from our friend Mr. M that owls are also predators. We talked about what makes an owl a predator and what types of food they eat. We also got to explore owl artifacts from FWP. We had lots of questions from our exploration: Why are there different sized talons? Do these thick, soft feathers keep them warm in winter? Are there different types of owls? Such deep thinkers and inquirers! After lunch we watched a video tutorial on how to draw an owl. This became a center at Inquiry Centers which ended up being a big hit! They also continued making masks representing different Montana animals. Today they began acting like these animals. Some even made other parts of the animals, like the tail. We also had some time for Math and Literacy Centers and Writer's Workshop. I leave you with a song by my favorite kid's band, and local Missoula Musicans/teachers, The Whizpops! We began the day with a read aloud called 1 Stuck Duck. The kiddos noticed that it was a counting book. They also made the connection that counting is a +1 pattern. Such thoughtful mathematicians. Then we found the missing number in a sequence of numbers on SMARTY, followed by Math and Literacy Centers. After recess we read Eat Like a Bear. We learned that bears will eat more than just fish and berries. Ask your kiddos what else bears will eat. We also explored the predator trunk from FWP. The animal artifacts included hides from a wolf, Grizzly Bear, mountain lion, fox, and a coyote. Pretty impressive. Ask your kiddo what a predator is. We also talked about how there are other predators in Montana that don't have fur, such as snakes, falcons, owls, eagles, and hawks. After finishing our exploration of the animal artifacts we had Inquiry Center Time. We added two new centers today, mask making and dramatic play with a set of Montana Animal figurines. Needless to say, those two centers were a hit today!
