What a beautiful day! We had a nice relaxing last day of school before break. We began the day with creative movement. We experienced story telling through movement with The Gingerbread Man story. Kindergarteners moving as the gingerbread man in their jammies has to be the cutest thing ever. We stayed in the gym after movement and were joined by the rest of the kindergarteners and the first and second graders for a Sing Along of popular holiday songs. After library we completed our page for our poetry notebook and read all our poems to our stuffed animal friends. After lunch we used building materials and incorporated our stuffed friends into our play. Check out their creativity: We played until our big buddies came to hang out with us before it was time for recess. After recess we celebrated Ms. J's birthday, packed up ALL of our belongings, and headed to specials. Another great day in K. See you in the New Year!

While waiting for our performance to begin we got together with our big buddies and read holiday books together. It was a fabulous way to start the day! What a fabulous holiday performance. There's nothing like watching kindergarteners sing and dance that melts the heart! It's finally back...the fluffy white stuff. We got all our gear on and went out to recess early so we could have the hill to ourselves. What a beautiful day! After a performance practice first thing this morning we came back to class and read the book The Night Tree, by Eve Bunting. It's a wonderful story about a family who has a tradition of going into the woods, finding "their" tree, and decorating it with edible decorations for the animals. We then made a representation of a night tree using bird seed. They turned out beautiful and will be coming home with your kiddo on Friday. The afternoon was super busy with lots of learning and last minute preparations for the performance and winter break. It's hard to believe the time is nearly here. Time sure does fly when learning lots and having fun! What a great day to explore our trunk of bear artifacts we borrowed from Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. Please ask your kiddo what they discovered. After lunch we were treated to a read aloud on Smarty of Bear Snores On, by Karma Wilson. We got a chance to explore the artifacts a little more at Inquiry Center Time. We also pulled out the set of Montana animals to explore. Ms. R and Mr. A wanted to build a forest for the animals so they problem solved and pulled out the fraction rods and built every detail the animals needed. Once again, another fabulous day in K!
We began the day looking at books at the carpet. It is such a joy to see the excitement in their faces when they get to sit and enjoy a book. Ms. Meyers and Ms. Devors, our school counselors, came in and taught a lesson on what to do when you have a misunderstanding with a friend. After lunch we spent some time in the ODC discovering the differences between today and the last time we had gone out into the Outdoor Discovery Core. Ask your kiddos what they discovered. They shared some great observations that led to many questions that we will answer in our next Unit of Inquiry about how animals survive winter beginning next week. After a little choice time we had a visit from our big buddies. We created appreciation cards for service workers in our community. They will be delivered to local firefighters, police officers, paramedics, social workers, etc. Yet another great day in K!
We started the day by making latkes! We finished cooking them in time to have them as a special treat after lunch. These latkes were not only super delicious, but they also were made mainly of farm-fresh foods! Here is the recipe if you would like to try it: We had some Inquiry Center time! Check out the amazing creations the kiddos made today. We also celebrated my last day today. Everyone made it a big secret, so it was a huge surprise to walk back into the room and find a the party you all planned! I was overwhelmed by the kind words, thoughtful cards and gifts, treats, and amazing books you and your kiddos gave me. I am so excited to share them with other students in the future. Thank you for your generosity and good company today! As always, I hope you have a safe and beautiful evening. Take care, and if I don't see you at the winter concert next Thursday morning, have a very happy and healthy New Year!
-Ms Krause Yesterday, we learned our poem of the week: Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel. It's a fun Hanukkah song! Today, we read a book called Latkes and Applesauce, by Fran Manushkin. We learned about Hanukkah and how to play the Dreidel game. After recess, everyone got into groups and had the chance to play. We also had some amazing Inquiry Center time. The new building challenge was the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. Mr. L and Mr. B made an incredible replica (below, although Mr. B chose to not be in the frame),as did Mr. A (among other amazing engineers in our class). Such a wonderful day in K! See you bright and early tomorrow.
We have a saying in kindergarten... "You may not like it but you must try it." Did you know it could take 14+ times of trying a food before we like it. It is important to give our kiddos many opportunities to try nutrient rich go foods, and in many different ways before we give up. My favorite saying of the day was from Ms. B, "Mrs. Winter, I didn't even know I liked kiwi!" Hooray! What a wonderful Monday! We began the day with a short movement lesson in the gym with Ms. Cooper's class. After movement, we started Math Workshop. We worked on measurement and terminology again today by measuring our bodies using standardized units of measurement. We chose to use popsicle sticks. While not an internationally-recognized unit of measurement, popsicle sticks are awesome because they're all the same size. We found that it's easier (and more precise) to measure and compare using the same objects, and we just so happened to have lots of popsicle sticks on hand. We problem-solved our way through recording our data (regular popsicle sticks are small and difficult to write on, but the kiddos really wanted to represent their information on something that looked like the sticks we used to measure it with. We realized that we had just enough large popsicle sticks to use for our data recording. After recess, we graphed our data. We also read one of my (Ms Krause's) favorite books today, Click, Clack Moo: Cows That Type. The kids loved it! Have them tell you about it. It's a wonderful and silly story all about barn animals who go on strike because they want electric blankets for their cold barn. Inquiry Center time was a blast today. The students loved pulling out centers from previous weeks. We also celebrated Miss L's birthday today. Happy birthday, little miss! Yet another amazing day in kindergarten! Happy Monday, everyone.
