Can it be December already? We made our December calendars today that were sent home with your kiddos. You will find important dates on that calendar such as holiday program date and time as well as our first pajama day and the next show and share day. Super important stuff!!! When they were done with their calendars they got to look at our new basket of holiday books. Boy was that an exciting part of our day!

Boy was it great to see all your kiddos' smiling faces this morning! I missed them terribly over my unexpected long break. They all had so much to tell me that we started with a Community Circle where they all took turns sharing all the things they were dying to tell me. After community circle we had Math and Literacy centers. It was great to go around listening to all their wonderful ideas and "ah-ha" moments. The winter weather is here! We learned the rules and new routines for putting on, taking off, and storage of snow gear. After recess we had Writer's Workshop. Your kiddos are growing so much in their writing. It is fun to see them start getting all the sounds written down in the words, start using spaces, and even have their illustrations come alive with details! After lunch we had Inquiry Centers. I pulled kiddos over to my table to have them write in their new Animals in Winter journals as a provocation to our next unit of inquiry. For gym today Ms. K got to be co-teacher with Master Rosbarsky from Missoula Taekwondo. Another great day in K!
We were so excited to have some time with our big buddies after two long weeks without seeing them. They helped us put together our thankful art and then read books with us. We look forward to our time with each other! Your kiddos have been learning various folk dances in gym with Mrs. McAllister. They practiced one last time before the Folk Dancing fundraiser for the Peace Choir this evening. Come join us in the gym tonight from 6:30-7:30. Hope to see you there! After specials we read a version of the story "Stone Soup". We had a rich discussion about how giving and sharing is important in all communities as well as how thankful we feel to have family and friends that are willing to give to us. Then after recess we began an art project that reflects the things we are thankful for. After lunch we listened to another version of the story "Stone Soup" and compared it with the story from the morning. Then we had Inquiry Center time while I wrote Your kiddos' thankfuls. At the end of the day we celebrated filling our warm fuzzy jar by having popcorn and watching a "Cat in the Hat" episode about the change of the seasons... exactly what we are learning about! Love when that happens.
We began the day with a fabulous math lesson representing number 1-10 with Zoo Friend sounds and moves. Each kiddo got to choose a number card and a zoophonics card. We represented that number by doing the zoo sound and movement that many times. Ask your kiddo what happens when someone chose zero! Then we had time for Math and Literacy Centers. After recess we had Writer's Workshop. We are working hard to come up with an idea to write, draw a picture to match our idea, come up with a sentence(s), and then sound out the words and write the sounds we hear. We also noticed popcorn words are popping up in our writing! Such hard work going on! After lunch we read In November, by Cynthia Rylant. Such a wonderful book about the changes that come when Fall transitions to Winter. Then we had Inquiry Center time. While your kiddos are creating, imagining, exploring, problem solving, thinking, etc I have been pulling groups to work on literacy skills. We have also begun adding popcorn words into our word journals. Each time we add a new word we practice the previous words. Then at the end of the year all their hard work can go home with them and they can practice over the summer. After snack we had a little extra time so I let them choose what they wanted to do. It was unanimous... they all wanted to look at books from the classroom library! Be still my heart!!!
I've been without a school computer since last Thursday. The district is working on fixing mine but in the meantime I can't check my email at school or do a blog post with ease. So.... here are some pictures of the last couple days!!! We learned a lot about each other today by sharing something special to us. We had books, blocks, masks, rocks, pictures, nature collections, a Taekwondo belt, a memory of a cousin, artwork, a special shell and a trophy. We also added the poem "A,B,C You Later" to our Poetry Notebooks. Here is the song to help your kiddos read their poem. Have a fabulous 3 day weekend!!!
We started the day honoring Veteran's at an all school Veteran's Day Celebration. We learned about the holiday, heard from a guest speaker that is a Vietnam Vet and sang along with the Peace Choir some beautiful America themed songs. When we came back to class we only had a few minutes before recess so we practiced the Democratic process by voting for either math center games or a Cosmic Kids Yoga. Cosmic Kids won the vote, 11-3. After recess we had Writer's Workshop and then went to lunch. After lunch we had Inquiry Center Time. We began the day with a lesson about the Day of the Dead. Two counselors from the Tamarack Grief Resource Center came into our class with Ms. Myers this morning. They read a book about the celebration that takes place on the Day of the Dead, they learned some Spanish words, they did a bone dance honoring a loved one that has passed (many animals were honored) and then we all shared ideas of how we make ourselves feel better when we are feeling sad. After our guests left we had Math Centers. We decided to only do math centers today because we all played one of the games created by our classmates. I continue to be impressed with all the wonderful ideas for math games your kiddos are coming up with. So many math standards and social/emotional standards are being met while playing these games with our friends. After first recess we had writer's workshop. We are working on putting spaces between our words when we write. We noticed today that when we have spaces in our writing it is easier for us to read. (We aren't all there but WE WILL ALL be there soon!) Then after lunch we worked on writing the letter Kk. Ask your kiddos about the "HI-Yay" FUN! Then I worked with some groups on reading skills while the rest of the kiddos were engaged in Inquiry Centers. Tomorrow we are having an assembly to celebrate Veteran's day. Have your kiddo wear read, white, and/or blue!
