We began the day reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Then we did a Cosmic Kids Yoga to the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Afterwards we compared the two stories and noticed the similarities and differences between the two. One of our kiddos asked if I would add the video to the blog so they can do it with their family so here it is: After yoga we began math workshop sharing our dice experience with Mr. C.B. that was absent yesterday. Then we brainstormed new dice games we could play. Mr. M created "DieJenga!" You and a partner take turns rolling a die, counting out that many wood blocks, and build a tower. Play continues until a tower falls over. Then you count and compare to see who had the most blocks in their tower. Miss K created "Minus the Cubes". You can play with multiple people but all players have to agree on how many cubes you start with, for example 10. Each player counts out 10 cubes. Players take turns rolling the die, counting that many cubes, and subtracting them from their group and putting them back in the bin. The first one out of cubes wins! These are all such amazing games created by kindergarteners! We explored these games at Math and Literacy Centers (which ended up being just math related today). After recess we had Writer's Workshop where we talked about adding on to our writing piece from yesterday. We noticed how challenging it is to read our own writing. I embraced the challenge and reassured them that this is normal and they will become pros with practice. After lunch we learned about and practiced letters Bb and JJ. Then we moved into Inquiry Centers where I pulled all kiddos to work on academic needs. It was another fabulous day in K! Please check you email for a copy of our conference schedule!
We began the day exploring dice. We observed them, played with them, and noticed cool things about them. For example, they noticed that the dots were set into the dice, or "concave". Then we asked "What can we do with the dice?" They started brainstorming games they could play with the dice. We tried out the game Miss F.S. created. She named it "The Marble Game". You can have four or less players. You start out with a basket of marbles. Each player takes a turn rolling the die, counting the dots, then counting out that many marbles. You play until all marbles are out of the basket. Whoever has the most marbles wins the game. So many math and social skills are being practiced while playing this game: counting or subitizing (recognizing how many without counting); one to one correspondence; adding on; counting groups and comparing; taking turns; problem solving; stamina! Way to go Miss F.S. Tomorrow we will add on and fine tune other student created games we will be playing during Math and Literacy Centers. During Math and Literacy Centers some kiddos explored my large cup of dice and built with them, made designs with them, and sorted them! So creative!!! After recess we had Writer's Workshop. They continue to write in their journals writing nonfiction stories about themselves. We call them "news stories", something they want to share about themselves with the class. After lunch we read a heart warming story titled, Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun. I was so proud of your kiddos in how much empathy they were showing for the little girl in the story. Ask your kiddos about how kindness over powered anger. This book reinforces our current unit of inquiry with the central idea "Emotions and actions affect learning." Then we had Inquiry Center time. We finally set up our daycare and realized we need some more supplies. Your kiddo may be asking to bring some things in to supplement the center. During centers I was was able to pull reading groups and meet with all kiddos to meet their current needs. Here are some pictures of some of them hard at work. Also, pictures were a success. Thankfully they came and got us before lunch. One group got done earlier than expected so the kind parent volunteers came and got the kinders so we didn't have to wait until after lunch. Thank goodness since most of them came in after lunch a little muddy and A LOT disheveled. Thank you parent volunteers!!!
We began the day with a little bit of yoga and then we worked on letter Dd and number writing practice. Followed by Math and Literacy Centers. We had our first monthly visit from Jake Arrowtop, a teacher for the district. He taught the kiddos about the different tribes of Montana by showing them each flag. Then he read a wonderful story Thunder Boy Jr. Then we discussed the origins of our own names. Ask you kiddo about the story! After lunch I read Clifford: Firehouse Dog. Then we had a visit from the Missoula Firefighters. They did a puppet show about fire safety. There was a song for each main message:
After reflecting about the puppet show we had some center time. During this time we had an Earthquake Drill followed by extra recess as a reward for meeting our school Bee Buck goal. Another fabulous day in K! Have a great four day weekend with your babes!!!
We began the day with a juicy math lesson where we played the game "Hickety Pickety Bumblebee". We clapped out syllables of our names, compared the numbers, read equations, keep an on going count by using the "count on" strategy, and created and solved story problems with the data. Love engaging math lessons like these! Then we had Math and Literacy Center time. I pulled groups of kiddos to work on the assessments we use that help determine scores for report cards. After recess we had Writer's Workshop. We are working on saying the words we want to write and then writing the sounds we hear. We had our first lesson on writing sentences instead of just labels. Your kiddos rocked it today. I am one proud teacher! After lunch we had Inquiry Center Time and I got to pull reading groups where we are working on pre-reading skills. We had snack in the Outdoor Discovery Core, recess, read a great story called This is a Moose, or is It?, did our calendar routines, then went to gym class before heading home. Another great day in K!
I wish every day could be "The Arts" day! We began with Movment in the gym. We moved showing the different emotions, sorted into the Zones of Regulation that we have been using in class for our new unit of inquiry. The central idea is: Emotions and actions impact learning. After we got back to class I read a non-fiction selection, Pumpkins, by Ken Robbins. The book took us through the life cycle of a pumpkin using words and brilliant photography. Then we made our own pumpkin patch learning about the horizon line and collage as well as reviewing mixing primary colors to make new colors. This project was also a fantastic lesson in listening skills and stamina. It had many steps and levels to it which took three different periods throughout the day to finish. Oh... and we also had a mini math lesson when we were deciding how many pumpkins to add to our piece- we practiced combining groups, comparing to see which group had more or less, as well as compared pumpkin size. It is amazing how many core requirements for kindergarten were addressed in this one, multifaceted art lesson! And the product is also amazing!!! We began the day as Friday's usually do, in Movement with Ms. Cooper's kiddos. We played a fun game called "Sticky Bones". When Ms. Cooper double clapped (the freeze signal) she called a body part and we had to find a partner to connect those body parts with and make an interesting shape. After movement we had a visit from Ms. Myers. She read Wemberly Worried and the kids made their next page in their Zones book they are making. After recess we went to the library and checked out new books. Then they added their new poem to their poetry notebooks that should have come home today. And of course, some centers after lunch before big buddies. It was a fabulous day in K! Here are some pics of our day! I am off to a llllloooonnnngggg Thursday afternoon meeting. We began our day in class doing yoga. There is a child friendly YouTube channel called "Cosmic Kids Yoga". It tells a story with the yoga moves. After we completed the episode we talked about the elements of a story: characters, setting, and plot (we describe the plot as a problem and a solution). After yoga we sorted objects by the amount of syllables each word has. This one activity had multiple benefits. It taught/practiced beginning sound fluency, counting syllables in a word, sorting, one to one correspondence, comparing quantities, and representing objects with numbers. I love when an engaging activity has so many educational benefits. Then we had Math and Literacy Centers. After recess we had Writer's Workshop. When we write words in Kindergarten we sound out the word we are trying to write and write the sounds we hear in the word. For example, the word "bear" might be written as b, or, br, or bar. All would be acceptable until they really learn the conventional spelling.
Before lunch your kiddos had a substitute teacher. Every third Wednesday the Kindergarten team has a district meeting called PLC. Your kiddos will have a sub from before lunch until almost last recess. With that sub they will finish Writer's Workshop, go to lunch, read aloud, and Inquiry Centers. This follows our normal routine! Today the sub said they did great! Always good to hear!!! Here is a quick outline of our day:
