We had our last visit from resident theater artist, Rosie Seitz Ayers. The kiddos created a story with all the important story elements and then performed it outside on the playground.

We finished our Bancroft Pond poster about the Painted Turtle. We will hang it in the display case at Bancroft next week!
We have been researching to learn about the Painted Turtle, one of the native species at Bancroft Pond. We had our 4th grade pond buddies in this morning to write down all we have learned about the Painted Turtle. Then we sketched and painted a turtle that will be added to our poster that will be displayed at Bancroft next week. So cool!
We began the day in Creative Movement. We each had a number, moved creatively in the dance space, froze at the signal, found a partner, added our numbers together and sorted ourselves by the answer. I love when art and academics are integrated! After movement we had a Ms. Myers lesson. She read us a book about how to fill everyone's invisible buckets. Then they wrote a postcard to their partner stating how they could fill their bucket. An example one kiddo wrote was, "Will you play with me at recess?" Then they read them to their partners before heading out to recess. We spent much of the afternoon with our big buddies in the Outdoor Discovery Core using our senses to explore nature. We also did a trash pick up in the ODC. It was a beautiful day to be outside!
We had the pleasure of having our third visit from Rosie. Today we acted out a story about a tree going through the seasons over 200 years. At the end of the story the tree is struck by lightning and splits in half. We got to decide what we would become if we were wood from the tree. We became sleds, wooden action figures, wooden robots, fire wood, and much more. At the end of the day we had snack in the Outdoor Discovery Core and enjoyed the beautiful day.
We learned about the Painted Turtle and sketched in our Reflection Journals. We will be creating a class poster about the Painted Turtle to be hung at Bancroft Pond.
Our second day with resident artist Rosie Ayers was a success. Check out the collaborative story they created. We began our day in movement class letting nature inspire our dance moves. We sored like Osprey, scurried like squirrels, flew like butterflies, and much more! A great way to start the day! After movement we spent most of the morning in the Outdoor Discovery Core. We found a sit spot and made a list of words inspired by nature. Then we did a popcorn read where we called out our most interesting words. The first time we did it, it was PERFECT. It was so beautiful I got the chills... total poetry. We tried to recreate the awesomeness! It turned out different than the first time but still pretty great! Shortly after lunch we met up with our 4th grade buddies and headed to Bancroft Pond. Lily from The Clarkfork Coalition, along with three folks from the city of Missoula, were waiting for us. As a group we cleaned up trash we found at the pond and planted about 50 new trees to help the Pond habitat. It was an awesome afternoon. We met with our temporary 4th grade buddies today. We will be walking with them to Bancroft Pond on Monday, 4-18. We will be working with the Clarkfork Coalition to clean up trash, plant new vegetation, and weed invasive plants at the pond. It will be tons of fun and a great way to spend a Monday afternoon!
With these 4th grade buddies we learned about each other by working together to make an acrostic poem about ourselves. Then we shared out one word that describes us well. Super powerful experience... Now we've made new friends in our Lewis and Clark community! |
