To begin Math Workshop today we went on a Shape Hunt around the classroom. Then we created story problems with the shapes we found, adding the number of shapes and/or the sides on the shapes. Then we went into Math Centers to reinforce the Math Concept of addition.

Monday we made sketches of Montana animals. Today we took those sketches, practiced the math concept "sorting", and sorted our animals by how they survive winter: tolerate, hibernate, migrate. Then I posed the problem of how to display this information out in the hall. They had fabulous ideas and were right on track with what I had in mind (and I didn't have to guide them). They decided to make signs for each group and sort their animals with their sign. They wanted to add a main title for the display, and they wanted to write what they learned about the animal they sketched. Phew! So Awesome! Here are some pics of their work. It is still a work in progress! I couldn't be more proud!
We began the day with Creative Movement, moving like different predators and prey of Montana. Then we played a tag game called "Predators and Prey"'which is much like the game "Sharks and Minnows". Instead of the Sharks chasing and eating the minnows, we were different predators chasing our prey. Then we came back to the room for math workshop. We began with using our Montana animals to create story problems. We learned to write equations to represent the story problems. Then we rotated through 2 of the 4 math centers. These centers reinforce adding and representing addition with equations. We will rotate through the other two centers next math workshop. After lunch we explored new centers. We also began our official reading group work. As you could imagine, the kiddos were super excited to get these groups started. Whoop whoop!
This passed week we learned about the Subnivean Zone and wrote about what we learned in our science journals. Check out these writers in action. What a great trip to the Natural History Museum followed by a short nature walk. Ask your kiddo what they learned (or re-learned) today. Because of the MCT play being set up in the gym, we weren't able to meet up with Ms. Cooper's class for Creative Movement. We decided to do some Yoga instead! Moving our bodies first thing in the morning is not only good for the body, it is super wonderful for the brain. Cosmic Kids Yoga has many videos on YouTube that not only gets the kiddos doing yoga but tells a story along the way. Within the story there is a message that teaches the kiddos a valuable life lesson. Today we did/listened to the story "Stella the Stick Insect". I often do these with my own boys first thing in the morning and they love them. Maybe a Saturday morning activity for the family? Let me know how it works out! In kindergarten we are learning how to ask questions as well as ways to find the answers to our questions. One of the strategies for answering our questions is to ask an expert. Today we had Ms. Vivica from Fish, Wildlife, and Parks come to teach us about how animals survive winter and answer some of our questions. Ask your kiddo what they learned from Ms. Vivica's visit. To begin math workshop today we made 2D shapes with our bodies with a partner. Then we moved into math workshop focusing on shapes. After lunch we read a story about how some animals live in a secret world under the snow called the Subnivean Zone. Ask your kiddos which animals live there. Then we made a plan to add the Subnivean Zone into our winter scene which we finished today.
Today we explored the Owl trunk from Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. Lots of discoveries were made while exploring the Owl artifacts. Ask your kiddos about what they learned about owls. This afternoon we explored new Inquiry Centers. Here are some photos taken by kinder photographers. We began our day in movement class making 2D shapes with our bodies. This movement lesson led us straight into Math Workshop where we worked with shapes. In kindergarten, we aren't just learning the names of the shapes, we are learning the attributes of the shapes, how to make shapes by combining shapes, and seeing shapes within other shapes and designs. After lunch we were blessed with a visit from Mrs. Thompson, the district art teacher. We completed the second step to our large self portraits. |
