We began the day in Creative Movement with Ms. Cooper’s class. We learned about moving at different levels throughout the dance space as well as freezing and making a shape at a certain level. Ask your kiddos to show you a high level shape, a middle level shape, and a low level shape. We ended our time with audience work. This is where your children are courageous enough to get up in front of the audience and perform for us. After we got back to class we added our new poem to our Poetry Notebooks, went to recess and then headed to Library! We read a book called, Yes Day. Ask your kiddos about the book! After lunch we made our October calendars. Hard to believe it’s October alreaady! Our favorite thing about Fridays?... seeing our big buddies. We took our color collections from last Friday out to the ODC and created Nature Art! We also got our book orders in today. Thanks for your order! Here is a picture of ALL the things we got for our classroom for FREE with points earned from your orders. Thank you! Another great day in K!

We began the day re-reading the bucket filling book at their request. It filled my bucket when one of our friends asked me to read it again because Ms. M and Ms. M were both absent yesterday and missed it. You know it’s a good book when they want to make sure everyone gets to read it! Then they shared with each other an example of how they filled a bucket at home or how their bucket was filled! My partner shared how she filled her dad’s bucket by snuggling with him this morning and how he filled her bucket by making her special pancakes. So special!!! Once we finished discussing bucket filling we turned our brains to patterning. We used our keen observation skills and went on a Patten Walk. We looked closely at the world around us to find patterns we see everyday. Here are just a few pictures of what they discovered. After recess we came in and learned about letters Tt and Ii. We sang the letter songs and practiced on our whiteboards. We also added the popcorn word “I” to our word wall. When we were done we had some time so I introduced them to Ms. Jamie, the Cosmic Kids Yoga Instructor. Ask your kiddos about it or maybe do it with them tonight. Here is the video: After lunch we read Bucket Filling A-Z, an alphabet book that gives ideas on how to fill others buckets as well as your own. Then we had some much needed Inquiry Center Time followed by some time out in the ODC. We ended the day with Calendar, reading our new poem, adding our other new popcorn word “you” in our Word Journals, and Spanish! Another great day in K!
We began the day with Math Workshop. We began by reflecting on all of the patterning activities we did last week. I was so proud of your kiddos because after the three day weekend they were able to recall and articulate what kinds of patterns they made and with what materials. That’s exciting! After sharing our reflections we looked at patterns on Mr. Smarty. We had to find the mistakes in the patterns, fix the patterns, and name the patterns with letters. Afterwards we got to choose unusual materials to make patterns with and share with the teacher. Check out their amazing ideas! After recess we learned about letters Mm and Nn and practiced on our whiteboards. After our letter work we did an activity where we had to name the first sound in a given word. For example, sand begins with the letter Ss but the sound is /s/. Being able to hear individual sounds in words is the first steps they need to be able to read! After lunch we read this great book you might know about. Here is a picture of the front cover. This book is like magic! It is a great way to describe how our actions affect others, good or bad. Ask your kiddos about the story and ask them how they were a bucket filler today!!! Then we had some Inquiry Center Time. This time is a very important part of our day. This is a time when your child gets to engage in play based learning where they get to make choices for them self, utilize their problem solving skills, and make sense of the world around them. During this time I will soon be pulling small groups. We will primarily be working on pre-reading and reading skills during these small groups. Another great day in K!
Lucky us... we had a visit from Mrs. Wallace our district art teacher. She read the book The Little Shop of Monsters and pointed out the expressions on the monster’s faces throughout the story. Then she introduced the project that emphasized symmetry, print making, and the proper use and technique of the paint brush. They made adorable monsters! After recess we went to the library and enjoyed a Mo Willems book before picking out books for ourselves. If kiddos forget their book from the week before, they have what’s called a “browsing day”. They get to use a shelf saver to hold the place of a book of their choosing, go look at the book with or without a friend, and then they put it back on the shelf at the end of library class. After library we added our poem of the week to our Poetry Notebooks. Poetry Notebooks come home each Friday. Please read the poem with your kiddo, initial the poem, and send it back on Monday mornings or Tuesday’s if there is no School on Monday. After lunch we had some Inquiry Center time. Patterns are showing up everywhere in their play! After recess we did our calendar routine and added the popcorn word “and” to our Word Journals. We ended the day in gym with Mrs. McAllister. Another great day in K!
We began the day in Music class. Then we came back to class and read Pattern Bugs. Before we read the book we were curious about how the book was going to show patterns. We predicted the bugs were going to have patterns on them like a bumblebee with a yellow, black, yellow, black pattern as Ms. K pointed out. We started the book and realized it wasn’t about visual patterns, it was about movement and sound patterns. After reading the book we created our own movement patterns. After recess we we learned about the letter Rr and practiced on our whiteboards. Then we pulled out our Word Journals and got caught up on our Color words. After lunch we had Inquiry Center Time. I pulled groups of kiddos over and we made patterns with our snack. They had to make a plan for their pattern, name their pattern, build their pattern, then name their pattern to be sure it matched their plan... and finally eat their pattern snack. Thank you Ms. M for the snack/math lesson supplies. After cleaning up from Center Time we had a wonderful visit from our big buddies. We went out in the Outdoor Discovery Core and made a Color Collection. They had to use their keen observation skills to find items in nature to match the colors in their trays. We will decide what to do with our collections tomorrow. Another great day in K!
We began the day with an assembly in the gym. We met Terrance Littletent from the Cree Nation in the Saskatchewan. He shared with us the importance of Oral Traditions and how at a young age he had to learn to be a good observer and listener so he could learn the oral traditions of his people. At the age of eight he began learning how to use Hoop Dancing as a means of story telling. Here is a quick look at his story told through his dance. After performing his dance he invited two kiddos to come and learn part of the dance. They rocked it! When we came in from recess we had our 2nd visit from Ms. Myers one of our school counselors. She visits us each week and does a lesson with the kiddos on how to be safe problem solvers. She introduced one way to solve small problems and that is to use "Stop, Walk, Talk". Ask your kiddos about it!
We started our day with our first Math Workshop. First we read Fish Eyes, a story about wishing to be a fish. In the story the fish were colorful with lots of patterns. It is also a counting story where it adds one more fish to each page. Your kiddos noticed that the counting "one more" on each page is also a pattern! Way to go kiddos... patterns are around us everywhere. After reviewing the patterns we made yesterday with the cubes they got to move through the math centers, creating different patterns with different materials. After recess we learned about two of our letters, Ee and Dd. We practiced writing them on our whiteboards. After lunch we made a chart of what makes a good friend. Then we read Enemy Pie on Storyline Online. One of my ultimate favorites! Then we had some much needed Inquiry Center Time. Notice all the patterning coming out in their play time. Love it! We ended the day finishing up our Color Books, recess, calendar routines, snack, and Media Arts. Another great day in K!
We began the day in the gym with Ms. Cooper's class for Creative Movement. We practiced following the agreements while moving creatively through the open spaces and freezing in interesting shapes when we heard the freeze signal. At the end of our time in the gym we did some audience work. Groups of performers came to the middle of the circle and showed us their moves while the audience practiced being good communicators, by watching the performers respectfully and thinking about their moves. After Movement we came back to the class and I made a mess with Unifix Cubes. I asked the kiddos to explore the materials to figure out what could be done with them. They immediately began building with the cubes. Some started making patterns while others were trying to create structures. Mr. B came to the conclusion right away that they were hard to build with because you could only connect them one way. Mr. C started creating math problems and asked the kiddos around him to solve the problems. Miss C was able to create a sort of gateway by getting the parts she had made to balance on each other. We shared what we had made and what we noticed about these cubes. After we shared, I showed an example of one of the cube trains made by Miss M asked the kiddos what they noticed. They noticed that she used two colors and repeated them in the same order. BAM! From that I was able to teach them the term "pattern" and what a pattern is. Then I had them start over and create their own pattern using the cubes. Everyone nailed it! Each kiddo was able to create their own color pattern using the cubes without any direction from me. Then they got to share their work with a friend and explain their pattern. Then we put the patterns together and compared the cube trains. Such a fun... AUTHENTIC... math lesson! My favorite! After first recess we were introduced to the individual class whiteboards. We sang the letter Ff song and then learned how to make the Frog Jump letter Ff... you start at the top (always) make a big line down, frog jump back to the top and make a little line, frog jump to the middle of the big line, and make another little line. We begin the year teaching the Capital letters during Handwriting lessons. There are only 4 strokes that make all 26 Capital letters... big line, little line, big curve, little curve. There are over 40 strokes to make the lowercase letters! We begin with Capitals to get the kiddos used to the language and so we can focus on their pencil grip while writing. After lunch we read The Day the Crayons Came Home and then had some much needed Inquiry Center time. We had some new centers set out today. Ask your kiddos about them! We ended the day with snack and calendar routines, followed by gym class! Another great day in K!
We began the day in the gym with Ms. Cooper's class for Creative Movement. We practiced the agreements and focused on hearing the Freeze Signal. When we hear the signal we make an interesting shape with our whole bodies. After Movement we had our first visit from the school counselor, Ms. Myers. She comes in every Friday (except when we have art with the district art teacher). Ask your kiddos about what was in her bag. During her visit we had our first fire drill... your kiddos ROCKED IT! After recess we had our first visit to the library and they got to check out a book. Books are due next Friday morning. They can bring them back early if they wish. If they come back early your kiddos can place their book in the library box by our classroom door. We will have Library Class every Friday at 10:00. Ms. Alissa came in and helped us check out books! After lunch we celebrated Internatinal Dot Day. First we read The Dot, by Peter Reynolds. Ask your kiddos about the story! We celebrated being artists by making our mark. We used all different types of media to create masterpieces of dots! We also got to play at Center Time with our big buddies! Lucky us! We ended the day with a healthy treat for Ms. R's birthday, we buttered our popcorn words in our Poetry Notebooks, and we had Music Class. Another super fabulous day in K!
