What a fabulous day to celebrate Halloween. We began the day in movement dancing our Halloween costume while the audience guessed what we were going to be. Then we had a lesson from the counselors about boogers. Yep... Boogers. Ask your kiddos about it! After library we read and acted out the story Ten Timid Ghosts. This is an adorable subtraction story about a witch that moves into a house filled with ghosts. She scares the ghosts away into the woods one by one. Ask your kiddos what happens at the end of the story. After lunch we changed into our costumes and had choice time while we waited for our big buddies. Once they arrived we split the two classes in half. One group of buddies went upstairs to Mrs. O'Connor's room and the other group stayed in our room. It was a pleasant afternoon of Halloween crafts, Halloween Bingo, and recess with our buddies. Check out these little cutie pies! We also got a visit from the cast of Inside Out. Way to go counselors and resource teachers! After recess we had a delicious, healthy balance of Halloween treats. Thanks parents for bringing in yummy treats! The kiddos loved it all! Have a safe, fun Halloween night!

After gym class this morning Ms. Krause read, Pat's Peppermint. Have your kiddo tell you about the story. After the story the kiddos wrote about something they have learned from someone special. Some of their writing included learning math from dad, learning to color mix with grandma, mom and dad teaching how to wash dishes, learning how to build with dad in the garage, etc. After lunch Ms. Krause did a movement lesson teaching the kiddos the life cycle of a berry plant. They performed their berry dance in front of an audience. The afternoon was filled with inquiry learning centers where Mrs. Anderson helped kiddos practice writing the letter Y, Ms. Krause played a fun Zoophonics game, and I worked with kiddos on a writing assessment to get ready for conferences. Centers were followed by a Halloween read aloud while kiddos ate their nutrient rich clementine pumpkin snack. Today began with reading and a special visit from Mrs. Sharkey's students, who performed their Readers' Theater! It was about a little girl who was trying to find her talent for her class's talent show. Ask your kiddo what "talent" the little girl found! We spent much of the morning making monsters! The students rolled their dice to find out how many of each body part their monster would have. The end product was hilarious! Be prepared to have a great time admiring their hard work. Their monsters are seriously adorable. We ended the day with Inquiry Centers, including a new Halloween-themed phonological awareness bingo! When the kiddos had four in a row, they got to say "BOO!"
Music wrapped up another wonderful day in kindergarten. We began the day with a read-aloud. The story, Berry Magic, is about a young Yup'ik Eskimo girl named Anana who wants to bring joy to her community during the Fall Feast. She does this by creating delicious berries to fill the tundra. We talked about how Anana was being thoughtful, grateful, and gracious to the people around her. We also had vision screenings today! Mrs. Winter taught the students how to use our classroom whiteboards. The kiddos had fun drawing pictures and then writing the first sounds they heard in words. As always, the students had a blast in Centers! We brought out some new, Halloween-themed Centers. They were a hit! We closed the day with snacks of strawberry yogurt and huckleberries (both of which are berries that grow in Montana, a connection we made to Anana's berries which grow in Alaska's tundra). The kids then went to Spanish, and before we knew it the day was finished! Today began with a new activity at Movement, called "Yes, Let's!" Every time a new character or theme was introduced, the students said, "Yes, let's!" and began the new movement. They loved being different characters seen at Halloween, including (but certainly not limited to) zombies, mummies, royalty, and unicorns. After Movement, we had a math-filled morning! We made estimations about lots of different things: the number of rows of kernels in the corn we brought back from Benson's, the number of kernels in the average piece of corn, and how many apples we made last week. We found out that there are usually around 16 rows of kernels in an ear of corn, and 800 kernels! That's a lot of corn! We also learned that, as a class, we made 190 apples last week. We figured that out by counting by tens. We also had a special guest in our classroom today... Mrs. Thompson, the art specialist! The students had such a lovely time drawing and creating beautiful fall leaves using warm and cool colors. Be sure to ask your kiddos which colors count as warm, and which are cool. We wrapped up the day with a snack and Media Arts. What a fabulous fall day! We started our Friday as we always do, with movement. The kiddos loved playing Mirror, Mirror, where they took turns copying their partner's movements. It was fun to partner up with kids from Mrs. Cooper's class, and make new friends! oWe got to use our pumpkins from Benson's in math. Each student measured how many connecting cubes long the stem of their pumpkin was, and then they compared their stem lengths with other students. It was so interesting to see who had more, less than, and equal stem lengths. We also used our pumpkins for still life paintings, inspired by the work of Matisse. They turned out beautifully! After making our still life paintings we read books with our friends while waiting for our big buddies. Our Big Buddies are always a major highlight of our week. They read us our new library books in the ODC. It was so nice to be outside in the fresh air. We wanted to take full advantage of these beautiful fall days before they turn too cold! Our poetry notebooks come home every Friday. Please read these poems with your children and enjoy their rhythm and rhyme! Have your child point out any popcorn words they might know. Do not expect your child to read these poems alone although they might want to. These poems are meant to be read together with your child. You may read the current poem but your child might also wish to reread past poems in their notebook. This week's poem is a beautiful song that we have been singing all week. Here is a video to help with the tune. Today started with book exploration. The kiddos love sharing things they see in their books. These range from letters to sentences. We love reading! We then read a book called Ten Apples Up On Top, by Dr. Seuss. It was hilarious! Later in the day, each student made ten apples out of paper and labeled them with the numbers 1-10. Although this task took quite a while, every student persevered through it and finished with smiles on their faces. We also got to have Ms. Myers today! She talked to us about being scared, and what we can do if we are scared. We learned how to do big belly breathing with the help of this song. It's always such a treat to have Ms. Myers visit our room! After lunch, we learned about the letter U (hence the title of today's post). We then went back to finish our apples, which was followed by Inquiry Center time! The kiddos had such a nice time at centers. As a part of our current unit of inquiry about healthy choices we have been talking about the importance of eating lots of nutrient rich "GO FOODS" that are fresh from the farm. Here is an excerpt from the website http://fit.webmd.com/ with some great information on getting the rainbow on your kiddo's plate:
Good health guidelines recommend that everyone -- kids and parents -- eat fruits and vegetables each day. The compounds that make fruits and vegetables good for the body are often what give them their color, too. So when you eat many colors, you're making sure you get a variety of nutrients. And because the body can't store some of these nutrients, you need to eat foods that contain them every day to protect your health. As the parent, grocery shopper, and cook, it's up to you to make fruits and vegetables available and appealing to your child. Here are some things you can do to make eating fruits and vegetables routine in your home.
