We began the day in movement with Ms. Cooper and her kiddos. Today we used axial and locomotor moves while moving like our zoo phonics friends while saying the letter sound. Perfect arts integration lesson combining learning letter sounds with learning two important dance terms, axial and locomotor. After Creative Movement we had a visit from Ms. Myers. We learned about the Blue Zone of the Zones of Regulation. When in the blue zone you are "Running Slow". These emotions include tired, sad, sick, bored. Your kiddos are making a zones book they will bring home near the end of October. After recess we headed to the library. When we got back to class we added "Way Up High in an Apple Tree" poems to our poetry notebooks. During this time Mrs. Anderson came in and presented three kiddos with bee awards. Bee awards are given out monthly. 2-3 kiddos per month will be recognized for following the 3 Be's and/or for exhibiting qualities of the Learner Profile (caring, inquirer, principled, balanced, open-minded, courageous, reflective, thinker, communicator, knowledgeable). Ms. K, Mr. C.L. and Mr. A got the awards this month. After lunch we had center time. I pulled kiddos in small groups to create a reflection from the farm for our IB Portfolios that will travel with your kiddos up through 5th grade. I asked them to draw a picture that represents something they observed that was interesting at the farm. Then our big buddies came in. We went on a fall walk with them to observe changes in our environment brought on by the change of the seasons. They headed to recess after our walk, came in and had a delicious, farm fresh snack, while listening to the adorable story, Library Lion. Then we headed to gym before dismissal!
Another great eat day in K!

After specials this morning we came in and did some whole group work with noticing and creating patterns with our bodies. We learned to name a pattern with letters. For example, if the pattern is a clap, snap, clap, snap, etc pattern we call that an AB pattern. Before heading to Math and Literacy Centers I have them the challenge of seeing how they can notice or create patterns in their work. After lunch we went to the PEAS Farm up the Rattlesnake. It was a gorgeous, perfect day for a trip to the farm. Ask your kiddos about it! We began the day with an all school assembly in the gym. They talked about the school's 3 Be's, the Bee Buck Store, the Learner Profile, and the Attitudes. Then we came back to the classroom and had some time for Math and Literacy Centers After recess we read a silly, fiction story about how the Alphabet was ordered called Alph's Bet. Then we sang the Mm song and practiced making m's on the individual whiteboards. After lunch we read a nonfiction story called A Day at the Apple Orchard. Then we decided to sort our apples by size. Followed by some Inquiry Center time. I didn't get as many pics as I would have liked as I pulled many different reading groups at this time. The groups worked on beginning sound recognition, writing the letters Ss and Mm, or segmenting and blending words which we call "sounding out words". Then we headed out to recess early and had snack and extra play time outside. It was the perfect day for it!
We began the day looking at all of our apples. After reporting our noticings to a partner and discussing them whole group, I asked, "What should we do with our apples?" They had some great ideas! We will explore these ideas and more throughout the week. I introduced the kiddos to the concepts math and literacy today. I explained math as all things that have to do with numbers, shapes, and patterns and literacy as all things that have to do with reading and writing. Very simple explanation but perfect for where we are right now in kindergarten. The reason for this explanation is because we started our Math and Literacy Centers today. These centers are academic, hands on activities that reinforce what we are learning right now. Then I introduced the kiddos to individual whiteboards. We practiced making the letter Ss after singing the letter Ss song. After lunch we listened to the story Ten Red Apples, by Pat Hutchins. The kiddos noticed it was a "counting backwards" book, or as Ms. S taught us, "a take a way story". Then we retold the story using our apples from home. Then some inquiry center time. We went out early to recess to have our healthy snack and then enjoy some extra sunshine and outdoor play time. They came in and were exhausted. I had them lay and rest while I read the book Chowder. Then our calendar routines and off to specials. Another great day in K!
We began the day with Ms. Cooper's class in the gym for Creative Movement. For warm-up we had to "observe, think, and do". We watched Ms.Cooper and we were her mirror. Then we learned about axial and locomotor movements. Ask your kiddos about those dance terms! After movement we had our visit from the school counselor, Ms. Myers. She visits every Friday and does emotional and social health lessons with the kiddos. Today they learned about Stop, Walk, Talk. We acted out scenarios where we could use Stop, Walk, Talk as ways to solve our problems. Ask your kiddos about it! After recess we checked out new books from the school library. Some of the kiddos had a "browsing day". They will be able to check out a new book when they bring their's back next week. After lunch we read The Way I Act and then had center time before our big buddies came. Our big buddies came down with books to read to us. We went out in the Outdoor Discovery Core, found a "sit spot" and read together. It was very relaxing and perfect weather! There is no school for kiddos on Monday. Enjoy the day with your babes!
Today we learned about "Mat Man". Mat Man helps us to draw all the parts of a body when drawing a person. Here is a video we watched after learning the song. We used Mat Man to make self portraits for our kindergarten hopes and dreams. After recess we read Chrysanthemum, about a little girl who loves her name until she goes to school. A group of girls tease her about her name, each time wrinkling her heart. We started with a nice, unwrinkled red heart. Each time she was teased I crumpled up part of the heart until is was in a crumpled ball. At the end of the story she is proud of her name again so we uncrumpled the heart. It was completely wrinkled and no matter what we tried we couldn't get it to be like it was before the teasing began. What a fantastic visual for an important lesson on kindness! After lunch we listened to the story Enemy Pie. Another great discussion about kindness and being open minded when making new friends. Then we had center time with some much needed new centers. First thing this morning we reflected on our time we spent in the Outdoor Discovery Core yesterday. We made many discoveries and noticings that we shared with our turn and talk partners. One of our biggest reflections was that many of us were surprised to find all the bright colors for our collections. I asked what they thought we should do next with our collections and they had so many wonderful ideas. They wanted to look at everyone else's at center time, sort all the collections by either color or object, they wanted to make something with them, and then someone suggested making art. So we all decided to make nature art with our color collections. Our big buddies joined us and we went out into the ODC with our collections, glue and paper and got to work. Their work turned out amazing! After all of the masterpieces were completed we laid them on the outdoor tables and did a gallery walk where we admired everyone's work! It was a great way to end the time together. All the positive compliments made this teacher's heart happy!!!
We began the day with our big buddies in the Outdoor Discovery Core. With a scientist's eye we looked for samples of different colors. We made a collection that we will use for a project tomorrow. We were shocked to find such vibrant colors. After recess we read Cat's Colors. Ask your kiddo what cat's favorite color is and why. Then we shared our favorite colors by coloring a cut out crayon and sharing it at the carpet. We used these crayons for an inquiry lesson into graphing. I asked the question, "I wonder how we could show everyone what our favorite color is?" They first wanted to verbally tell everyone they saw, then they suggested wearing them like name tags, then they wanted to tape them to the wall, and eventually they wanted to tape them to a piece of paper with the title "Favorite Colors". We turned this last idea into a graph. Check it out tonight at the Open House. Our afternoon consisted of last minute preparations for Open House and some center time.
We began the day in the gym for Creative Movement with Ms. Cooper's class. We used our bodies and imaginary buckets of primary and secondary colors to paint masterpieces on our imaginary canvases. Then we came back to the classroom and read Monster's Love Colors, a book about primary color monsters that like to shake, dance and wiggle to make new colors. Then we made our covers for our Color a Day Books that they decided to title, Colors. But first, we studied the front covers of a few of our favorite class books. We noticed that they all had a title, an author and a picture. We used what we noticed to design the covers for our books. After recess we finished our covers and then played a name game. We are still learning each others' names. All of our classmates can name at least 4 people in our class. Ms. F.W. was able to go around the circle and name everyone! Amazing! When we came in from lunch we listened to The Kissing Hand on the Storyline Online website created by the Screen Actors Guild. Then we got to choose one of three centers: finishing their circle art, create a self portrait for our display in the hall, and decorate an Open House/Ice Cream Social invitation. They got all three jobs done and then had some center time. Tomorrow is a redo of Favorite Color Day! This time I'll be there!!!
