We had a great day today. We are down to the wire and trying to get our end of the year projects wrapped up. Here are some pics of our time in the ODC in the afternoon.

We just spent the afternoon with the artist and animator of "The Little Mermaid", Philo Barnhart. We also chatted with Charles the Comic Book artist and creator about how to come up with stories! It was an AMAZING afternoon!!! After lunch today we went around and spent some time in each of the first grade classrooms. We met the teachers, the current students, looked around the rooms and most of all... asked our burning questions. Their questions were so thoughtful. I was beaming with pride! Here are some of the questions they asked today: -What is your favorite subject to teach? -Do you have any pets? (If the answer was no to class pets they asked if they have any pets at home. So cute!) -Do you have center time? -Will we get to play? -And they even asked the first graders what their favorite part about first grade is. When we got got back to class all of the kindergarteners were so excited. We rated our feelings of moving on to first grade with a thumbs up for super excited and they couldn't wait, a thumbs to the side for excited but still a bit nervous, and a thumbs down for not excited at all. All thumbs were up or to the side. We discussed the feelings we were having but decided we all can't wait for first grade!!! The rest of our day was fabulous as well. We went to a band and orchestra concert in the morning, had a guest reader from Mrs. Meurer's 1/2 class, and had some center time after we visited the first grade classrooms. The greatest thing about these pics.. most were taken by the kiddos. Check them out. We started the day with a math worksheet like first graders do! Followed by Math and Literacy Centers. After first recess we had a very productive Writers Workshop. Your kiddos are in the midst of creative story ideas. They have come so far! After lunch we had Inquiry Centers. Then we went out early to celebrate Mr. T's summer birthday with yogurt pop sickle sticks. Yum!!!
What a crazy busy, wonderful day we had today. We began the day with a math worksheet reinforcing the concept of "equal to" and "not equal to" followed by Math and Literacy Centers. After recess we had a very productive Writer's Workshop! After lunch we practiced being an observer and looked closely at the details of a Robin's Nest Mr. C brought in today. Then we sketched those details in our Nature Journals. Then during Inquiry Center time I pulled Reading groups. I am so proud of how far your kiddos have come as readers. Hard to believe they are almost first graders.
We began the day with Creative Movement in the gym with Ms. Cooper's kiddos. We watched a video of a beautiful dancer that was inspired by nature. She created a Spider Dance. Then we made our own spider dance followed by other dances inspired by other insects and other animals found in nature. We came back to the room and learned about the equals sign and the not equals sign and compared numbers using the appropriate language. After recess we worked on the books we are creating in Writer's Workshop that are inspired by nature. We were also introduced to our new poem for the week, also inspired by nature. I love the mountains! After lunch we had our last visit from the district art teacher, Ms. Web. They created rabbits with chalk pastels by using shapes to make the basic form of the rabbit. They turned out super adorable and will be coming home today! After art we had some free choice time. Boy were they excited and boy did they need it. I let a few of them have my phone and they went around and took pictures. What fabulous photographers they are. :-) I had to take some pictures of your almost first graders! Check out these super focused writers during writer's workshop. We ended the day in the Outdoor Discovery Core where we had snack, explored, and sketched in our Nature Journals. What an amazing field trip! It was a great day to dance like fish, create a dance as if we were plants sprouting from a seed, dance like professional dancers-learning dance terms like plié, and showing off some of our own wicked dance moves! Check out some pictures from our field trip to the Downtown Dance Collective. Thank you teacher Heather and thank you to SPARK! for funding this experience! We began the day working on addition and subtraction on a worksheet like first graders. They were so excited! Then we followed with math centers. After recess we were introduced to our new Nature Journals that we will be using during our Unit of Inquiry on how nature inspires creativity. After looking at my nature journal we made our front covers by drawing something from nature. After lunch we took our Journals into the Outdoor Discovery Core and sketched something we found interesting in nature and labeled our sketches. It was a perfect day to be outside! Mirror, Mirror, on the wall...can you copy me? That is all :) The kiddos moves their bodies to the sounds of instrumental music. The kiddos copied each other's movements and practiced their leadership roles. Mrs. Winter reintroduced our Natures Unit and showed the kiddos what is coming up next week! The kiddos will be documenting nature sightings by writing/drawing them in their nature journals. The kiddos are beyond excited to start this unit:) Oh the adventures during Inquiry! The kiddos chose what they wanted to do today and demonstrated full independence in their decisions. They came up with some creative structures and artwork with their big buddies! Project Lead The Way: Force and MomentumThe kiddos explored how force can control the momentum of an object. The kiddos also discovered how force is created with either pushing or pulling! A Beautiful Farewell!Dear Parents and my wonderful class!
