Here are a few photos our kinder photographers took during our Inquiry Learning Centers. We had a fabulously fun time out at last recess. We sure are going to miss each other! It is hard to believe our year together is almost over! Mr. Brown came in and taught us about Glaciers and his role in studying them. We did two experiments illustrating how glaciers flow. We also saw some amazing videos and photos of Mr. Brown and his experiences in studying glaciers in Alaska, Antarctica, and Greenland. Thank you Mr. Brown. We took a field trip over to UM Grizzlies Soccer field to watch a Special Olympics Montana soccer game. We cheered on both teams even though we were all given blue shirts to cheer on The Otters whose team color is blue. We were very excited to find out that we get to keep our new shirts. We had a great time! We began our day with our Monday Morning Movement time with Ms. Cooper's class in the gym. This is an amazing way to get our kiddos' brains ready for the day. After first recess we began our new unit of inquiry about how people use writing to share stories. I laid out a collection of hand picked stories, read the titles one by one, and had the kiddos share with a turn and talk partner what they thought each story was about. After looking at the books Tough Boris, Our Granny, and I Am the Dog, I Am the Cat I posed the questions, "What if I told you these stories have something in common? What do you think it would be?" They came to a group consensus that the stories all had a pet in them. They continued with this theory when the other books were introduced. Great theory, however when reading Our Granny they discovered there wasn't a pet in the story. What they did discover was that the authors of these books chose to use an AB pattern. The words in these stories go "back and forth". This type of text structure is called a "Seesaw Text". We will be exploring using the seesaw structure when writing our next book. This afternoon my iPad was swooped up by a couple of kiddos who went around and took some pictures while I finished administering the DiBels literacy assessments. Professor Fluck came this afternoon and taught us about the Turban which is worn by men in India. We learned that the different colors stand for different things, i.e. a white turban is a symbol of peace.
We finished up our Earth Saver Campaign by hanging up fliers around our school and taking a walk around our neighborhood. On our walk we cleaned up trash and passed out our fliers we made that included our Earth Saving Tips. We included our big buddies and had a blast making a difference in our community! We were blessed with a visit from the infamous, Professor G-Whiz. Thank you to a family in Ms. Paoli's class for organizing this event. G-Whiz showed us many "magic tricks" using different chemicals. Some of us even got to try out the experiments. At the end of the visit we moved outside to see some that involved fire. We had a pretty exciting afternoon! At the end of the day we had a balanced Birthday treat from the birthday boy. Happy birthday Mr. C!!! Another fabulous day in kindergarten!
What an amazing visit! Your kiddos did awesome! Before going into the classrooms, to send our "No Littering" message to the big high school kids, we collected a bunch of garbage from their parking lot. 10 big bags of garbage from just one, 50 foot sidewalk. During our talk with the big kids we showed them the garbage bags and the very little effort it took to find it. They were shocked. The big kids also seemed to be very receptive to our message. I am very proud of how courageous these 5 and 6 year old's were today. Way to go kiddos! |
