We finally got to meet our big buddies from Mrs. O'Connor's third grade class. We paired up with our partners and went into the Outdoor Discovery Core. Our big buddies taught the kindergarteners the rules of the ODC as well as how to take observational notes. They explored the ODC together and got to know one another. We will have many opportunities to team up with our buddies throughout the school year.

Our applesauce turned out so delicious! The room smelled like yummy goodness for nearly the entire day. Each of the kids got to peel their own apple with an apple slicer and peeler before adding it to the crockpot. We have been doing a lot of apple related activities. Last week, we read a book about apples each day and did activities such as "measuring with apples," apple flash cards, and graphing apples! Today, we read Ten Apples Up On Top by Dr. Seuss. Then we created mini self drawings and numbered "ten apples up on top" of our heads during a center. Of course, we also made that yummy applesauce!
What a great day at the PEAS Farm. The PEAS Farm is located up the Rattlesnake here in Missoula. It is an organic farm that supplies food to the community. It also teams up with schools in the area inviting classes to come explore their farm and the farmers teach kiddos about many aspects of farming. On our trip we were able to sample many of the vegetables that are grown at the PEAS Farm. We were able to try carrots, peas, onions, tomatoes, cauliflower and a variety of kale. The best part about it.... the kids LOVED the samples! My favorite quote of all time, "This is the best kale ever!" Check out some of the photos we took while at the farm last Friday!
What a busy day we had yesterday! You may have noticed that your kiddos came home possibly feeling a little cooped up at the end of the day. Due to poor air quality we had to stay inside all day. Kindergarten kiddos have it a little easier than other grades when it comes to indoor recess. We have classrooms equipped with play time. Our kiddos were lucky and had choice time three times yesterday: at morning recess, lunch recess, and at our normal choice time. It didn't seem to bother them to be inside for the duration of the day but by the end you could tell they were ready to get outside and RUN! Let's hope for bluer skies today so we can go on our field trip to the PEAS FARM!
Last night was our parent Curriculum Night! Thank you to all who were able to come. For those that weren't able to come I will be sending home important information in your kiddo's Thursday Envelope tomorrow. Here is a list of what we covered last night:
We hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! We're looking forward to another busy, fun week. In the meantime, here are some photos from the Ice Cream Social. It was a blast seeing you there.
What a fabulous yellow day we had here in our kindergarten classroom. We learned the yellow song, made a yellow jar, created our yellow duck for our Brown Bear book, read the book The Little Yellow Leaf, and had a yellow snack! We also learned how to pass out, use correctly, and clean up our individual whiteboards. We used them for math today where we drew pictures to represent numbers. The most exciting part of the day was when we had our very first Writer's Workshop session. I read the book Bad Dog Marley, by John Grogan. We read the book looking at it with a writer's eye, looking for how authors get their ideas. Then the kiddos were introduced to writing in their Writing Journals. Something elso we started yesterday is "Letter of the Day". Each day we have a letter we focus on. The kiddos learn the zoophonics animal, read a letter poem and circle all the letters that correspond to that letter of the day, and color a picture of the zoophonics animal on the back. We also started the program, "Handwriting without Tears," which is a program we use here at Lewis and Clark that helps kiddos learn how to form their letters correctly. Yesterday's letter was F and today's was E. Tomorrow we will be working on D. In the afternoon we used our name sticks to pick a choice center to play and have fun in. What a fun filled day!
I am sure that it is no surprise that we do lots of singing and moving in kindergarten! It is one of the many ways kiddos at this age learn. Here is a super cute video of our kiddos singing and moving to the song "Tony Chestnut". Our wonderful kindergarteners had another fast-paced day today. We made September calendars, complete with some important information on them. Be sure to check backpacks to make sure you receive them and can hang them up!
Today, everyone learned the picture schedule, which tells each group of kiddos the rotation of learning centers they will be working at. Blocks and puzzles were two of the learning centers today, which are shown in a few photos below! We also got to sponge paint our "purple cats" for purple day! Toward the end of the day, our class got to meet our school counselor, Ms. Myers, and they also got to spend a bit of the afternoon with her before heading home! Today was a fabulous first full day of kindergarten. We began the day by making Bono the Monkey's Famous Gluten Free Banana Bread Muffins. Then we were lucky to have a visit from Ms. Tracy from Beach Transportation to teach us about bus safety. We got to take a ride on a school bus to practice being safe on the bus. We all enjoyed the ride and we were safe doing it! After our bus ride we got to have lunch and then go out to lunch recess. When we came in from recess we realized that Bono had stolen our muffins. He led us on a scavenger hunt around the school looking for them. He left them with Ms. Bridget! That silly Bono Monkey played a trick on us! Nearly everyone enjoyed the muffins. There was a chorus of "MMMM"s in the classroom! They were rather delicious. After our treat we explored the color orange, completed our orange goldfish page for our Brown Bear books, played in the puzzle center, went to last recess, learned "hand shake, hug, or high five" to say goodbye, then went to gym class with Mr. Yeakel. What a busy day! Reminder, tomorrow is purple day! |
