Holy smokes is it really a day away from March? Boy does time fly when we are learning and having fun! We made our March calendars while listening to Irish Music. We also had new math centers reinforcing addition- creating, reading and writing an equation; adding two more to a number and reading a number word, a numeral, tallies, and dots to find the answer; adding two numbers and noticing all the ways to make a number; and partner numbers of ten.

We began the day in Movement class. We have been learning some disco moves and dances for the Disco Hop. Today we learned how to do the YMCA! I took our concentric circle abstract art inspired by Kansinsky and cut them into fourths. Today we put our art back together, like a puzzle, and discussed our roles in the different communitites that we belong to. Then we kept one fourth and shared the other three fourths with our classmates. We put our new puzzle together and did a "gallery walk" to look at all the new masterpieces. We made the connection to our communities. When we come together in the community we make something beautiful, like our families, our classroom, our school, and our town. Then we glued our new circle art to a new sheet of paper. We will be using these next week for part two of the project. After lunch Mr. S came in to teach us about his important role in the community. Ask your kiddo about the visit. Then we were blessed with some choice time with our big buddies. Another fabulous day in K! See you at the Disco Hop!
After specials first thing this morning, Ahka read us a great story called Dreambear. It was a great story with beautiful illustrations. Ask your kiddo about the story. Then we learned about the world famous ceramist, Julia Galloway. Julia is also a teacher at the U that I had the pleasure of taking a Master's class from a few summers ago. Today we used the tools that Julia taught me to make a class coil pot. After I made the base, each kinder kiddo was given a piece of clay. They rolled it out into a long coil. Then they individually added their coil to our class clay pot. We connected this, once again, to our classroom community... just one coil doesn't make anything but you put them together and you have a beautiful masterpiece! We also had a visit from Ms. G. She taught us about her important role in the community. Ask your kiddo about the visit. Our stuffed animal friends joined us at Inquiry Centers. In the writing/art center the kiddos made dresses, crowns, hats, casts, etc. for their stuffies.
We began the day with reviewing what we have learned about communities, the communities we belong to, and the roles we play in those communitites. Then we each took turns picking a block and adding it to our collaborative building structure. We noticed that just one block by itself is just a block but when you add all the other blocks it turns into "something cool". We connected this to our classroom community. All of us together make "something cool"... our classroom community! Then we looked at our masterpiece and decided what it looked like to us. Some thought it looked like a tank, a castle, a sperm whale, a fighter plane, and much more. We sketched our structure and wrote about it in our writing journals. After writing about our structure the kiddos wanted some time to work on their books. Mr. W finished and published his first piece. He got to read it to the class in Author's Chair. After lunch Mr. R taught us about the important role he plays in our community. Then he stayed for Inquiry Learning Centers and shared his math materials with us. Then of course some Inquiry Center Time. We went outside a few minutes early to recess to enjoy some of that beautiful sunshine we've been having! After snack we curled up with our books from home!
We began the day with a visit from the high school kids from the FFA. We learned about the Future Farmers of America, learned about our visitor's favorite part about the program, and heard some stories about farm life. Then we had special guests... A two week old goat and a two week old lamb. Timmy and Jimmy were the highlight of our day! After recess we had a visit from our school nurse. She taught us all about why and how to keep our teeth and mouths healthy. After the nurse's visit we had our special visit from "The Produce Mom". She reinforced all we learned from our unit of inquiry on healthy choices. She was super impressed with all the knowledge our kinder kiddos had on making healthy food choices. We nailed it!!! After lunch we had a visit from Mrs. C about her role in the community. Please ask your kiddos about the visit. (I was subbed out for a meeting and didn't get a pic of Mrs. C... Sorry:( I also didn't get photos of center time either.)
Another great day in K! After Creative Movement with Ms. Cooper's class we had math workshop. We focused on creating and solving addition story problems, making addition equations focusing on 5-groups, and building 100 using the 100's charts. After lunch we had a visit from Mrs. Schick. We learned all about her role she plays in our school community. Ask your kiddo about her visit. Then we had Inquiry Learning Centers. I pulled small groups for writing instruction.
Today we learned about the father of Abstract Art, Wassily Kandinsky. We learned about the art form itself and then took a stab at making abstract circle art like Kandinsky's. We made a small circle representing ourselves, added another circle around that to represent our family, then another to represent our classroom, then another for the school, then Missoula, then Montana, and the rest of the space represents the world... All the different communities in which we belong. They turned out so awesome! We also had a visit from Mrs. A teaching us about her very important role in our community. Ask your kiddo about the visit. Later in the afternoon we got to spend time with our big buddies. We love spending time with our buddies!
Wow what a busy day! After specials first thing this morning, we did some literacy letter and word work, followed by writer's workshop. We are currently writing our first books that will be published soon. So exciting! After lunch Ms. M came and taught us about her important role in our community and brought us some goodies for our hospital dramatic play center. Then we had Inquiry Center time. I didn't get any pictures this afternoon but the one below. Mr. E ended up on the floor making a structure of 100 Legos when he discovered some ants he was curious about. I couldn't resist taking this great picture that truly shows an example of how truly curious kinder kiddos are. I love it!
Math workshop was a success. We enjoyed math centers that focused on the 100's chart and addition story problems. After lunch we had a visit from Mr. B. He taught about his important role in our community. Ask your kiddo about the tools he uses and how he keeps the community safe. Then we got to see the big rig that Mr. Winter brought in to share with the kindergarten classes. Another great day in K!
We began the day with a little Cosmic Kids Storytelling Yoga to get our brains and bodies ready to learn. Then we were able to have an extra long writer's workshop. We officially started our first books that will be published when they are finished. We are very excited at the thought of becoming published authors! After lunch Mr. N came in to share with us the role he plays in our community. Ask your kiddos about the visit. Then the kiddos had Inquiry Learning Centers, recess, snack, and Music class. And an extra thanks to Mrs. S for taking over for me this afternoon so that I could take care of my sick kindergartener. |
