The best $0.99 spent? . . . Used pool noodles from Goodwill. Thanks to my husband for cutting them into whole circles, halves, and quarters. To start our inquiry lesson on fractions today I held up a half and two quarters and asked the kiddos what they noticed. They noticed the texture, the color, the shape of each, how to combine them to make new shapes, etc. Then I gave each partner group some halves and quarters and let them explore. They made some really cool creations. Based on one partner's creation of many circles made from the halves and quarters, we learned about fractions and how parts of a whole can be represented in fractions. Then I added in the whole circles and we made a new creation with partners. Partners came up with a name for each of their creations and shared with the group. In the afternoon we were introduced to new Inquiry Learning Centers. One of the centers involves making creations with the cut up pool noodles and sticks. We sure do have a bunch of creative kiddos showing their imaginations! Another center combines fine motor skills with math skills. They must predict how many cubes they can stack before falling over, use tweezers to grab the foam cubes, and stack them ever so carefully. Ms. D and I only got to seven. It was more challenging than it looks. Mr. B is at another center involving a sensory bin filled with sand and several objects, some of which are magnetic and some that are not. We had this activity a few weeks back that involved open inquiry, where they got to explore the materials and see what they can discover. This week the kiddos' must find the objects using a magnet and sort them into piles of magnetic vs. non-magnetic. Then they must record their findings. Mr. C used these abstract drawings as a template for a creation. His creation was developed with a very elaborate, make believe game that he created himself. Very detailed... nice work Mr. C! Our dramatic play center this week has been turned into a doctor's office! For our block center we added some bits and pieces to make things a little interesting. Their creations were amazing! And took for ever to clean up... the hazards of great work! Last recess was beautiful! These two sweet things were enjoying the sun!
